The Undeniable Truth
During the winter of my freshman year, the dreadful news that my grandfather was diagnosed with Leukemia haunted me for years. Doctors told me and my family that his condition was incurable but could be prolonged a couple of years.
However, I was smittened with reality when my childhood caregiver was suddenly declared lifeless after one week in the intensive care unit. I do not hold superpowers to revive a person, but I realized that I could carry on his legacy and gain awareness for this type of disease.
I was thus inspired to become the main organizer in a locally prominent charity organization situated in Yuanlin City, Taiwan. Blood donations were at hopeless rates in Yuanlin due to the city’s rural location and the ongoing rise of COVID. Since patients with Leukemia are typically in high need of blood donations, my promotion during a time of blood scarcity was crucial in fulfilling my mission to assist those who suffer from the same conditions as my grandfather.

I was the lead event organizer in a charity organization located in Yuanlin City. The non-profit organization has been influential within the local region, conducting hundreds of charity events over the past years to relieve health problems of the homeless, disabled, as well as the general public. This time, I initiated a partnership with the Yuanlin Blood Drive Center, spending months planning a promotion event that would generate a large positive impact on blood donation.
We gathered lottery tickets, gifts, and food to incentivize people to run donations. We specifically arranged the event at the largest train station in town so we can get various people aside from the residents to contribute to our cause. I was most proud of organizing an activity that attracted even more donors; I invited a mentally disabled musician who mastered playing the organ to conduct a concert performance to vitalize the blood drive center.
The musician was born blind, but he had an incomparable talent when it comes to playing instruments. By executing this kind of activity to captivate more potential donors, I also achieved recognition for the performer’s hard work and talent that compensated for his genetic disadvantages. The event lasted for several days, and audiences were exponentially increasing, most of which would stop by to contribute blood donations. Overall, the event proved successful and received honorable mentions from local administrators and the governor of Yuanlin.

From all these services, I am definitely aware that I became more mentally fulfilled from establishing a greater awareness on the importance of blood donations, especially on how they are increasingly vital to people who suffer from the same conditions as my grandfather. This was another way of extinguishing most of the grief I had from the unforgettable tragedy and achieving remembrance of an impactful figure in my life.
